My career in the IT industry
Have worked for small companies, medium sized companies, government organizations and several big multi-national companies.
Just after getting my masters degree at Radboud University I went on a 3-month IT trainee-ship at a consultancy firm working mainly for government organizations.
Already at that time in the 1970-s some smart people advised to get out of programming as soon as possible.
The consensus at that time was that within 3 to 5 years all development would be automated.
I ignored their advise as I liked to program and by the time my job would be obsolete there was enough time to move up in the chain.
Have seen many different attempts to automate away development, but they all fell short of expectations.
Usually, you could do 80% pretty quickly, but the other 20% took up most of the time.
AI changed everything
Around 2024 everything changed with the advent of AI agents like Google Gemini, Github Copilot and Deepseek.
Deepseek was heralded as the "Sputik moment" of the IT industry. Suddenly the world was confronted with an LLM model that could be build on about 5 million USD instead of the over 5 billion USD spent in Silicon Valley.
Even more striking, it was build on less powerfull GPU processors and despite crippling US sanctions.
